Lucignano is a charming medieval town which represents one of the most extraordinary examples of Middle Ages city planning , for its elliptical structure, came to us untouched from the previous centuries and considered nowadays “Val di Chiana most precious place”. The city planning expands trough a very interesting spatial and functional structure between “ rich street “ ( Matteotti street , the main one . south) where the nobles places are, and “poor street “ ( Roma street, Corsica as well . north west) where poor and small houses, build by the town less well – off are. Lucignano for its position which looks at the Val di Chiana, Siena, and Arezzo, is very important nowadays and it was also in the past. Because of its strategic position it was object of quarrels between the neighbouring lands. For approximately three centuries, from 1200 to 1500, Lucignano had many jurisdictional changes between Siena , Florence and Perugia, from which had as present the possibility to adorn itself with a coat of arms in which a winged griffin is represented, adding a star which shown that Lucignano was placed in a hill.
To underline is the fact that Lucignano won the Touring club orange flag trough its beauty and hospitality to the tourists.
Lucignano is visited each year by million tourists coming from every places in the world , attracted not only by the historical – artistic beauty, but also by the area typical culinary art and by the numerous cultural events which take place in the town and also in the neighbouring areas during the year.
